Dale Digby came to Boss Cabins with a background steeped in recycling and quickly embarked on a mission to drive greener practice within the company.
Boss was already on a trajectory to make worksites more sustainable with our solar- powered GenFree and Deep Green sustainable product lines and we wanted to spread this ethos throughout our factory. With his experience of recycling, it made sense for Dale to take on the mission of transforming Boss Cabins’ waste management system.
Dale explains what this entailed: “A little over a year ago, when I took on this role, it was clear that Boss Cabins were not in the best place when getting rid of the waste produced within the business.
“One of my first key goals was identifying the different waste streams our company generates. That process meant being honest about the waste created, looking at every type of waste and asking if we were being responsible with how we disposed of it.
“Working alongside production lines, sub-assembly departments, paint shops, and fabrication teams, I looked closely at the array of waste streams at Boss Cabins, and the stark truth was that back then some of our waste wasn’t being managed as effectively as it could be.”
After that initial analysis, Dale’s next task was to find a responsible waste management partner who would help us find effective and accountable solutions to our waste management issues that did not just paper over the cracks but produced real compelling results.
Dale explains: “Some businesses find it easier to bury their heads when it comes to getting rid of their waste and lots of waste companies are happy for you to do that. Why? Because it creates an easy life – easy life for the business as they just dump their waste and forget it, and an easy life for the waste disposal company and they just collect the waste and cash in on it without needing to fully account where it has gone.
“That kind of greenwashing wasn’t for us. Here at Boss Cabins, we pride ourselves on transparency with the sustainable products we manufacture, and that ethos had to carry over into our waste disposal process. We needed to find a waste management company who could help us organise our waste structure in a truly responsible way, and I am very happy to say we have found that with Veolia.
“Veolia’s expertise has revolutionised our waste management, transforming it into an efficient, orderly, and most importantly, transparent system. Veolia are able to show us full movement of the waste from collection to delivery and recycle sources. We have full traceability on waste from cardboard to glass, hazardous waste to electrical components.
“Using Veolia’s useful online Hub Centre tool, we can see at any time exactly what waste we are producing and where it is going, revealing how effective our new waste management structure is. In addition, Veolia has an open book policy that allows us to visit their new waste site in Peterborough to witness exactly how our waste streams are being managed, a really interesting and reassuring experience.”
“After a year of working with Veolia, we are over the moon with the results. During 2023 and the first two months of 2024, our partnership with Veolia has meant that we have stopped over 323 tonnes of rubbish from going to landfill, 79.59% of our total waste, a truly impressive figure.
“In total, 51% of our entire waste output has been recycled, which is fantastic. And even more excitingly, the remainder of the waste that Veolia collected but wasn’t able to recycle, has gone into Veolia’s innovative ‘Waste-to-Energy’ stream.
“This general non-recyclable waste is placed in RoRo Compactor Skips located at our factory. Once full, Veolia removes this waste to its Energy Centre where it undergoes a process of controlled burning, releasing heat. This heat turns water to steam within a boiler. This high-pressure steam then powers the blades of a turbine generator producing electricity. All harmful emissions created by the burning process are removed by an air pollution system before the remaining gas is released.”
Dale concludes: “Through our pioneering award-winning GenFree and Deep Green solar-powered cabin ranges, Boss Cabins’ products are contributing to lower carbon footprints on worksites nationwide. And we are delighted that our new waste reduction program allows us to practice what we preach and lower the carbon footprint of our own business further too, with us able to remove 58,000kg of CO from our waste process – the equivalent of taking 22 average cars off the road each year, powering 35 average houses or planting 201 trees!
“We are over the moon that already after just 14 months, our partnership with Veolia is producing such great results, curbing the waste that goes to landfill, fostering sustainability, and making a tangible impact on the environment.”
