UK welfare manufacturer Boss Cabins recently supplied Shetland-based company NESS ENGINEERING LTD. with 4 x solar-powered sustainable Deep Green welfare units.
PARTNER: | Ness Engineering Ltd. |
CABIN MODEL: | 4 x Deep Green Canteen Twin 12 |
DATE RANGE: | 13th Feb to 26th April 2023 inclusive |
LOCATION: | Shetland, Scotland |
General Synopsis
The towable 12ft welfare Canteens are for use on various projects around Shetland. The units were delivered and in use by 13th Feb. This case study shows the results for the date period 13th February to 26th April inclusive.
RESULTS
From the 24/7 monitoring and reporting of occupancy and power consumption data, we know that the units have been in regular use. During the 53-day period of this case study, all four cabins have performed exceptionally. Despite being in the early part of the year and in an extreme northerly location, one of the cabins has derived 100% of its electrical energy requirements solar with the generator only starting up for its regularly programmed maintenance turnover. The other cabins have derived 98%, 93.4%, with the lowest being 88.3%. Between all four units, there has only been a combined generator runtime of 7 hours 37 minutes. The low generator run time means the units have been operating virtually silently throughout giving a peaceful work/rest environment in the cabins.
COST AND CARBON SAVING ANALYSIS
TOTAL FUEL & CO2 EMISSIONS SAVING: Comparing the Deep Green units to standard ‘eco’ welfare cabins (with 12V lighting and USB charging) with an estimated average generator run time of 4 hours per day, Ness have saved at least 1631 litres of fuel and avoided 4177kg of CO2 emissions (Scope 1) during the 53 day period. If you use a CO2 calculation that includes the Scope 3 emissions from the production of the diesel production process then this CO2 saving rises to 5154kg.
WEEKLY COST SAVING: In cost terms, Ness have saved an average of £463 per week on fuel alone. In addition, we estimate the average weekly saving on generator and toilet servicing on a 12ft single toilet Deep Green unit to be £57.90, increasing the saving across the 4 cabins to £694.60 per week.
TOTAL COMBINED SAVINGS: Over the 53 day period, total fuel saving is estimated to be £3506. With toilet servicing and generator servicing savings included, that figure rises to £5259.
